After School Programs

DJHCC was awarded two 21st CCLC program grants to fund our programs for 5 years. What is a 21st CLCC?

The 21st Century Community Learning Center program is a federal program that allocates money to each state. The states then hold competitive grant programs to award the money to school districts and community based organizations running before-school, after school, and summer programs that are working to close the academic gap in a school district.

We follow specific guidelines for programming and reporting. We have goals we must hit and benchmarks we are working toward.

Programs

  • Located at Long Beach Elementary School, Kinder-2nd grade students explore science, nature, art, social skills, outdoor play, and reading. Intended to help develop friendship skills and core competencies, our staff work with small groups on projects and activities rooted in play.

  • 3rd - 5th graders stay at Ocean Park Elementary for a program that dives deeper into their interests and explores art, science, nature, gardening, technology, math, cooking, and physical activity. This is a great place for kids to get active, keep engaged, and explore interests.

  • Located at Hilltop, our 6th-12th grade program is more than just tutoring and study hall (though we do include dedicated time for that each day). With field trips to local places, advanced art, and career exploration options, this program is designed to help kids start to think about their future and reach their goals.

  • This program is specific to before and after school. We are not daycare (though we know that we often fill that gap) and therefore must follow specific guidelines outlined in our grant and ensure we are compliant with state regulations. We follow the school calendar set by Ocean Beach School District.

  • K-2 Students attend program at Long Beach Elementary. 3rd-5th grade Students attend program at Ocean Park Elementary. 6th-12th Grade Program is at Hilltop School.

  • Program ends at 5:45PM at both sites. All kids need to be picked up by that time. IHS students who have permission to walk, ride with friends, or drive themselves, will need to leave by 5:45PM. Bussing from sites to different community drop points at the end of program.

  • As a 21st CCLC Program, we have attendance goals that we must try to meet. Our goal is that 65% of students attend over 30 days during any given school year. We ask students to work to attend 2+ days per week or every day for a short period of time.

  • Each of our sites can accommodate approximately 65 kids per day.

  • As a 21st CCLC Program, we have a data sharing agreement and a close partnership with OBSD. We communicate with teachers and administration often about student needs, how to help students succeed and how to align with the school day.

  • We would love to answer them! Give us a call at 360-207-1871 or email jennifer@djhcc.org

Each year, our 21st CCLC Programs are evaluated and assessed by an external evaluator. Our full evaluation is available to view here! In addition, our staff participate in training and work around the Youth Program Quality Indicator tool that helps us to self-evaluate and improve our program throughout the year. We write an annual improvement plan and track our progress towards meeting our goals.

Part of this process includes engaging with community members - if you are interested in being a part of our 21st CCLC Advisory Committee, please email jennifer@djhcc.org!
